The Ballad of Jessie's Peace
of Mind
Jessie went to her mail box one day and found
that she had one letter so she picked it up and she looked at it and noticed that there
wasn't a stamp or postmark on it, only her name and address. So she read the letter and
this is what it said.
Dear Jessie,
I'm going to be in your neighborhood Saturday
afternoon and I'd like to stop by for a visit.
Love Always,
Jesus
Well, Her hands were shaking as she placed the letter on the table and she couldn't help
but wonder why the Lord want to visit her because she certainly didn't feel like she was
anyone special. As she walked through her kitchen she noticed her empty kitchen
cabinets she thought to herself "Oh my goodness", I really don't have anything
to offer my Lord. I'll have to run down to the store and buy something for dinner. Jessie
reached for her purse and counted out all of its contents and found a total of "Five
dollars and forty cents". So she threw on her coat and hurried out the door for the
local market. A loaf of bread, a pound of lunchmeat, and a carton of milk left Jessie with
grand total of twelve cents to last her until Monday. Still she felt good as she headed
for home, her meager offerings tucked under her arm as she left the store. Then she heard
a voice behind her saying "Hey lady, can you help us, lady?" Jessie had been so
absorbed in her dinner plans that she hadn't even noticed the two figures huddled in the
alleyway. A man and a woman, both of them dressed in little more than rags. "Look
lady, I ain't got a job, you know, said the man and my wife and I have been living out
here on the street, and, well, now it's getting cold and we're getting kinda hungry and,
well, if you could help us, lady, we'd really appreciate it." Jessie looked at them
both and they were dirty, they smelled bad and, frankly she was certain that they could
get some kind of work if they really wanted to. Jessie said to the man "Sir, I'd like
to help you, but I'm a poor woman myself. All I have is a few cold cuts and some bread,
and I'm having an important guest for dinner tonight and I was planning on serving that to
Him." "Yeah, well, okay lady, I understand. Thanks anyway said the man as he put
his arm around the woman's shoulders, turned and headed back into the alley and as she
watched them leave, Jessie felt a familiar tug at her heart and then she said. "Sir,
wait!" The couple stopped and turned as she ran down the alley after them.
"Look, why don't you take this food. I'll figure out something else to serve my
guest." So she handed the man her grocery bag and the man said "Thank you lady.
Thank you very much!" Then she heard "Yes, thank you!" She looked and
It was the man's wife, and Jessie could now see that she was shivering so she said.
"You know, I have another coat at home. Here, why don't you take this one. Jessie
unbuttoned her jacket and slipped it over the woman's shoulders. Then smilingly, she
turned and walked back to the street without her coat and with nothing to Lord at His
visit. As she walked away she heard them tearfully saying "Thank you lady! Thank you
very much!" Jessie was chilled by the time she reached her home, but as she was
opening the door she noticed another envelope in her mailbox. So she took the
envelope out of the box and opened it and this is what it said.
Dear Jessie,
It was so good to see you again. Thank You for the lovely meal and Thank You, too, for the
beautiful coat.
Love Always
Jesus
Yes the air was still cold, but Jessie no longer noticed because she was warmed from the
inside out and filled with God's peace of mind from doing His will in her life on that
day.
Have you felt a familiar tug at your heart
today?
"What are you going to do about it"?
